Frequently Asked Questions

Curation Standards:

At the Clean Beauty Compendium, we hold high standards for our products. We work hard to keep product’s ingredients up to date and accurate.

In order to be included in the Clean Beauty Compendium, a brand’s product must rate a 3 or lower on EWG, CosDNA, and/or Huahae.

Why do you allow up to a 3 (considered moderate concern)?

Sometimes makeup needs to be waterproof and/or go the extra mile for one reason or another; be it work – i.e. modeling, acting – OR personal preference.

Through copious research, we have found products that stand up to the endurance test while being as safe as possible. 3 is on the lowest end of moderate concern, and products with this rating typically do not contain ingredients such as synthetic fragrances, phthalates, or parabens.

Why are non cruelty-free brands included?

Cruelty-free products are not a priority for all makeup/skin/haircare lovers. In an effort to have the most comprehensive directory, we have included these brands. If this is a priority for you, we have created a cruelty-free brands list.

At the Clean Beauty Compendium want everyone to know which products are clean and safe to use no matter what standards they hold for their skincare, makeup, or haircare. We would not be fulfilling our mission if we did not include EVERY clean product available.

Can brands pay/give incentive to have their products listed on the Clean Beauty Compendium

NO! Absolutely not!

If you have not yet read our disclaimer, it goes something like this:

Any brand included did not pay/incentivize us to have their products listed. All opinions/reviews of these products are 100% that of the Clean Beauty Compendium, as we DO NOT ACCEPT ANY monetary compensation or affiliated incentives to post a certain rating or opinion on products listed in the Clean Beauty Compendium.

Why is a certain brand/product not listed?

A certain brand or product may not be listed for several reasons:

  1. We have not gotten around to adding it, or are not yet aware of the brand’s/product’s existence.
  2. The brand does not contain any products rated a 3 or lower.
What do the symbols next to brands'/products' names mean?

We created this legend so consumers with certain standards can quickly identify which brands/products are for them. Our legend is listed at the bottom of each directory page, but we have also included a comprehensive legend here for you to reference:

V – This product/brand is vegan.

ø – This brand has attempted to incentivize the Clean Beauty Compendium to post certain products or ratings. While this reflects poorly on the company’s ethics, we have still listed their clean products to keep you (the consumer) informed and allow you to decide if you wish to spend your money with that brand.

GF – This product/brand is gluten-free by one of two methods:

    1. 1. the product naturally contains no gluten
    1. 2. or gluten has been removed from the product

K – This product/brand is certified Kosher

H – This product/brand is certified Hilal
